The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has put the brakes on her upcoming nuptials 20 days after announcing her engagement.
On January 3, 2012, the legendary R&B singer announced her engagement to her "forever friend" William 'Willie' Wilkerson. In the days immediately following the announced engagement, the blushing and bubbly bride-to-be could be heard on radio discussing her plans for choosing a designer for her wedding dress. Among the wedding dress design contenders were: Vera Wang, Valentino and Donna Karan.
The giddiness over the upcoming wedding didn’t last long.
On Franklin’s Facebook page, she announced, "Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time. We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends."
Franklin is intensely private and there was no statement as to whether she and her forever friend will continue to be significant-others or if the romance is off entirely.
We commend her for taking a step back rather than going forward when she apparently has reservations, which seemingly appeared after she made the decision to get married.
There probably would be less divorce if more people had the courage to call off a wedding when things don’t feel right.
